Ways to Make Your SUV More Fuel Efficient

With rising gas prices, it’s smart to look for ways to lower your car’s fuel consumption, especially if you own a larger vehicle like an SUV. Fortunately, there are many ways to save on fuel. Here are some of our favorite tips.

Maintain Proper Tire Inflation

Under-inflated car tires mean more resistance from the road surface, resulting in more friction and, as a result, more fuel consumption. If all tires in your car are under-inflated by even 10 psi pressure, it could result in a reduction of fuel efficiency by almost 10%.

Don’t Overload Your Boot

The lighter you travel, the greater the car’s fuel efficiency, so try to keep the boot as light as possible. Don’t try to stuff every inch of the space with your bags or cargo just because your car can fit it. If you can’t avoid carrying stuff, try to spread out the weight between the cargo area and the back seat.

Keep the Ac on While Driving

Contrary to what most people believe, driving with all windows down and the AC switched off will not improve your car’s fuel efficiency. It will actually consume more fuel because of the increased wind resistance on the car. So, if you’re driving long distances, make sure to keep the AC on and the windows shut.

Maintain Medium Speed on Highways

If you drive down a highway at top speed, your engine has to work extra to overcome wind resistance, resulting in higher fuel consumption. On the other hand, if you drive too slowly, your car will drop to a lower gear, which will also use more fuel. Given this, try to maintain a steady speed to obtain the best fuel economy.

Braking

The way you handle your car’s brakes can play an important role in how quickly it consumes fuel. If you’re looking to save on gas costs, make sure that you don’t apply the brakes too suddenly (unless absolutely necessary). Remember that each time you brake too harshly, your SUV’s transmission will have to downshift to the lowest gear automatically to regain the momentum that is lost. Lower gears need faster engine revolutions, and this uses up more fuel.
